We all know that the weather can be mischievous in September, with summer coming to an end, we have gone from a very warm 33C to a cooler 16C in the last few days. The children are all back at school and the IWI Basel members are looking forward to many local activities; afternoon tea at Ettenbuhl, a theatre visit, wine tasting trip in the Alsace and our favorite curry night and not forgetting our crafty creations event, where a lovely member is going to try and teach some of us how to knit. There will also be a surprise social city walk organized by one of our charities ‘Surprise Stassenchor‘ (details will be posted soon). So why not join us and become a member of the IWI Basel.
With the summer slowly coming to a close and a very hectic calendar ahead for the members of the IWI Basel. I thought we should take some time to reflect on the last couple of months, where we have met for either IWI events or just as good friends. We had an ‘American style BBQ’ evening, Swimming in the Rhine, and a fab Gin-tasting evening, which was very informative! Basel Refugee Day which raised 850 CHF for Soup & Chill, a charity that supports the homeless in Basel. We received our brand new (and very popular) IWI aprons and some of our members have gone into training with their running shoes on (keep it up, ladies).
This week we had our members meeting to discuss the rest of the year, and we have 21 planned events! We expect some busy months ahead, and some great fun.
Welcome to the June Newsletter.
Please find below a list of wonderful events that were run over the course of June.
6th June: IWI Members Meeting
8th June: RADIO X
Sandra Willi spoke on Radio X with Claudia (from Soup and Chill) to promote the Refugee Day and IWI Bake Sale (Thank you, Sandra)
10th June: IWI at the ISB Festival in Reinach
17th June: Refugee Day held at Barfusserplatz
IWI had another wonderful day selling our donated cakes, aprons and our famous preserves (yum). We were able to donate a sum of 850 CHF to Soup & Chill. This was another wonderful event full of fun and laughter and wouldn’t have been happened if it wasn’t for our wonderful member volunteers.
23rd June: Off to the Theatre – Blithe Spirit
25th June: Sunday Brunch at Martkhalle
After being closed for the Basel Art Fair, Markthalle was once open again for us to enjoy another great get together.
As part of our International Kitchen of 2017, there was a How to make Cheese demonstration followed by a ‘Cheese & Wine’ Apero at Markthalle.
The demonstration was given by the owner of MYLK, a new and unique cheese producer in the heart of Basel. Hess produces his own cheese, yogurt, and quark as well as selling other cheeses from well-known artisan producers. The cheeses on offer range from fresh soft cheeses through semi-hard and hard cheeses. Following the very interesting explanation of the cheese making process, the IWI sampled a variety of the cheeses on offer and were also able to purchase some to take home.
Event Closed! Next Bake-off in December 2017.
Our first Bake-Off of the year will take place on Saturday 1st April at Markthalle in Basel. Non-members are welcome to participate. Our chosen charity for this Bake-Off is the Frauenhaus and 50% of the proceeds of the competition cake sales go to support this incredible charity.
